#RealTalk #MentalHealthAwareness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you follow me on social media, you’ve probably seen at least some of my posts during this time. I’ve tried to post some fact or inspiration daily.

Mental health should not be forced into a closet. It’s a real issue and there should be an open conversation about it. Depression and anxiety issues have greatly increased since Covid entered our world. I don’t even want to think about the suicide rates. We’re living in hard times, yet people will often turn a blind eye because… well, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s fear or guilt. Maybe it’s lack of understanding. Whatever the excuse is, we need to get passed it.

Let’s start with some things you should know about mental health:

  1. Mental health is as important as physical health. Sometimes more important. We need to strive for healthiness all across the board. One can greatly affect the other.
  2. Depression comes in all forms. Sadness, tears, loss of appetite, fatigue, anger, restlessness, panic/anxiety attacks.
  3. It can affect anyone at any point in their life. It doesn’t matter if you have the happiest marriage. Or your job is a dream. You can even attend the greatest, most supportive church. None of this stops the darkness from creeping in.
  4. It doesn’t happen every day. We can have really great, high days. Where we’re happy and eager to interact with people and the world. Then, the next week or even day, we want to be left alone. We want to be shut-ins.
  5. It’s okay to ask how someone is feeling. Just don’t expect an actual answer every time. Sometimes, we can’t explain it. We don’t always know what triggers the depression. But showing you genuinely care can do wonders. You can also ask if there’s anything you can do for them, even if it’s just to listen.

Now, let’s talk about coping mechanisms. Given, these don’t work for everyone and sometimes, there is no “quick fix.”

  1. Meditation. Breathing exercises to help calm your soul and mind.
  2. Walking or being one with nature. Taking a walk outside, surrounded by trees and sunshine and the peace that only nature can provide.
  3. Music. Listen to it loud, and sing to it off-key. This is a great way to let the emotions flow.
  4. Words. Whether you’re into reading, writing, or both. It can be therapeutic. Reading allows us to escape reality for a bit. Writing can do the same. Or it can be a release of all the negativity and the unknowns.

If you struggle with your mental health, here are a few important reminders:

  1. You are never alone. Read that again. There are people out there that can relate. People that are willing to listen and help. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to go outside our immediate circle.
  2. It’s okay to reach out for help. A friend or family member, a doctor or therapist. Do what you need to get yourself to a better place.
  3. Medicine is sometimes necessary.
  4. It’s okay to have good days and bad days. Focus on the good when you’re able to, and breathe through the bad.
  5. It’s also okay to cancel plans. Ask for whatever it is to be rescheduled.
  6. Above anything else, remember you are exactly who you are meant to be. A creation of God or whoever/whatever you believe in. You’re unique. You’re human. And it’s going to be okay.
