Book Reviews

The Shift
by Evelyne Crowe

BLURB:The end of the world began on a Tuesday morning.

The day started out like every other day with Diana getting ready to go to work, but Earth had different plans.

First, it let out the magic.

Then, it destroyed humanity’s ability to make electricity.

Diana rescues Sam, a man who suddenly can Shift into animal form, and they cling to each other as the world falls apart.

Can Diana fight the attraction she feels for Sam? Will Sam learn to control the magic thrust upon him? How will they solve the problem of there being only one bed?

REVIEW: This story was interesting. I was confused yet fascinated by the whole concept of The Shift. It was a quick read, too. Good characters, good writing, and some steaminess that made me blush more than I’d like to admit.

FAVORITE QUOTES: “The rising sun was red, forcing its rays through a film of ash and smoke from a nearby wildfire…”

“For years there had been a sense of waiting, as if the world were holding its break.”

Jingle Ale the Way
by Sarah Everly

BLURB: All I want for Christmas is the day off, a pint of Jingle Ale the Way, and Jason Fowler.

Spending the holidays in Franklin Notch this year doesn’t feel very merry. I’m stuck at work, there’s no snow, and not a single present under my tree. Until Jason Fowler comes back home.

My longtime crush magically appears, delivering drinks? It’s a long fall from grace for the celebrity chef. Doesn’t matter. He’s back home, helping his sick father, and I’ve got a plan to make him stay.

Coming home for Christmas wasn’t my plan.

But couple my unemployment with my dad’s failing health and instead of spending the holidays cooking, I’m slinging beer across New Hampshire. The only good news about any of this is Stephanie’s working the holidays, too. Our all too friendly, and often flirty, relationship has grown over the years, but living hours apart and only seeing each other occasionally, I’ve never worked up the nerve to ask her out. Maybe this Christmas I can convince her to be mine.

Jingle Ale the Way is a two-hour standalone cheery holiday novella. If you love holiday drinks, ambitious gifts, and standing under the mistletoe, you’ll love this short romance.

REVIEW: I found this book during a fun Christmas Facebook Party. And I’m so glad I did! It’s a sweet and quick read. There’s humor and romance and meddling family members. I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the story.

FAVORITE QUOTES: “That familiar feeling of attraction I successfully managed to stave off of in Boston roared back to life and I couldn’t function like a normal person.”

Odriel’s Heirs
by Hayley Reese Chow

The blurb: The brave, burning with fire, harnessed the Dragon’s Rage….

As the Dragon Heir, seventeen-year-old Kaia inherited the power of flame to protect her homeland from a godlike necromancer’s undead army. But after centuries of peace, the necromancer has faded to myth, and the Dragon Heir is feared by the people. Persecuted and cast out, Kaia struggles to embrace and control her seemingly useless gift while confined to her family’s farm.

But when the necromancer’s undead terrorize the land once again, Kaia runs away to join the battle.

With the help of her childhood rival, the handsome Shadow Heir, and a snarky, cursed cat, Kaia must figure out how to control both her fire and her confidence in time to save Okarria. If she fails, she will sacrifice her family, her new friends, and the enchanting world she has only just begun to see.

And time is running out.

###

My thoughts: As a writer, I’m ashamed to say I have no idea where to start with this review. The book is just that good. It completely pulled me in, kidnapped my soul, and wouldn’t release me until I read the last page. And I’m totally okay with that.

Let’s start with the writing… The words flow beautifully from page to page, chapter to chapter. There are incredible descriptions that transport you into Kaia’s world. Speaking of her world, there’s a really cool map in the beginning pages. I envy the creativity of those that can build worlds like this.

Next, let’s talk about what you’ll find in Odriel’s Heirs. There’s magic and beautiful characters with the most interesting relationships. Let’s not forget the emotional rollercoaster you will undoubtedly be forced to endure. Not only do we experience a new world, but the author has created many wonderful creatures and half-humans. Again, kudos for the creativity that went into this book.

Now, for my final thoughts. If you enjoy fantasies, I highly recommend Odriel’s Heirs. It’s the first book in a series and well worth the read. Here are a few lines I highlighted to give you a glimpse of what’s within the pages:

Her heart careened around her ribcage as she remembered her training.

…the ancient legends had broken open like old wounds.

The sky turned blacker than the darkest night…

…her whole world hung on this one last desperate hope…

Bellarose
by Carla Reighard

The blurb: Join Bellarose in the adventure of a lifetime as she finds a magical library—one that turns books into portals that lead to a world of fantasy where she becomes a character inside each story.

Instead of visiting familiar tales as old as time, the classic stories each have a new twist. Characters will crossover in new retellings—with Aerowyn the Enchantress manipulating it all.

In this prequel to The Aerowyn Tales, get ready to enter a world of magic like none you’ve ever seen before.

###

My thoughts: I love this story! It’s adorable and magical and ends entirely too quickly. (I’ve already bought the next book!) The author has a beautiful way with telling the story and describing the scenes. What we have in Bellarose is any book lover’s dream. And the author has a new fan.

Highlighted Quotes:

A feeling of intrigue overtook her first impressions.
It glowed with an aura of something other-worldly…

The Scenic Route
by Christina Baker Kline

The blurb: Driven by desperation to hit the road, a woman sees her life come into view in a powerful short story about starting over by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Exiles.

Once happily married with a young son, Jess takes to the road to escape her failed relationship and the disappointment of losing touch with her son. Four years into a nomadic existence, she has learned the hacks of van life and promotes a fantasy version of it on Instagram that bears little resemblance to her eclectic community of fellow travelers. But it’s that camaraderie, and the vastness of the great outdoors, that gives Jess the space she needs to find out what really matters to her. And act on it.

###

My thoughts: I didn’t know much about this story when I downloaded it. The book was an Amazon Prime First Read, and the cover is gorgeous. Honestly, I’m so happy I chose this book. From the first page, I was hooked. The downfall? It’s a short read. And it’s only a downfall because I want more time with Jess and Glinda and Nessie.

The writing and the story completely envelopes you. Doses of the past and present intertwine as you walk Jess’s adventure. The ups, the downs. The humor, friendships, and heartbreak. Such a ride!

I felt a personal connection to this story, which I think added to my love for it. I’ve been in similar shoes, and at one point in my life, I wanted to escape from everything and start new. Maybe a lot of us experience that. Kudos to the author for writing such a dynamic book. I intend on reading more of her work.

I didn’t highlight any lines this time. I think I was too engrossed to remember to do it. But this one line did stick out to me…

“Paradox of stillness…”

The Hay Bale
by Priscilla Bettis

The blurb: Contemporary Southern Gothic meets weird horror in this new novelette from Priscilla Bettis.

Professor Claire Davenport yearns to be a mother. After suffering four miscarriages, the university microbiologist tries and fails to qualify as an adoptive mother. Then Claire’s husband leaves.

Alone and emotionally wounded, Claire takes a summer sabbatical from her microbiology classes and escapes to rural Virginia to heal. There, she meets local farmers with strange agricultural practices.

Claire moves into the historic manor house she rented for the summer, and an abandoned child greets her. Is the child real, an answer to her prayers? Or is he a figment of her tormented emotions? Perhaps the tight-knit locals are playing a trick on the science lady from the city.

Whatever the boy’s origin, Claire is determined to find the truth, but the truth may be bloody.

###

My thoughts: This was an interesting, quick read with great writing and fantastic descriptions. The author does a good job of reeling the reader in at the beginning of the story. There’s a small town vibe with a spooky, mystical feel.

In one word, The Hay Bale is bizarre. Also, a little mind-boggling. Kudos to the author for insane creativity. A week later and I’m still thinking about that ending.

Highlighted Quotes:

Smallclaw was a beautiful but fruitless shell.
The reverend’s bass voice tumbled out the open doors like boulders rolling downhill.

She Sees In Her Sleep
by A.M. Manay

The blurb: The past is a long time when you are immortal. Seeds planted long ago in the lives of vampires and fairies bloom and produce unexpected fruit in the present. In the award-winning November Snow Series, our main character reaps the harvest of decisions made long ago. The three short stories in this collection provide a glimpse into the back stories of several key characters as well as insight into plot points that arise in all three novels in the series. “She Forges a Peace” provides a glimpse into the formation of the ancient alliance between fairies and vampires, an event with a surprising connection to November. “He Worships his Queen” delves into the painful childhood of vampire Luka, the complex primary villain in She Dies at the End. “She Fears the Dark” focuses on popular fairy characters Pine and Zinnia as they take a trip to Disneyland that turns into an unexpectedly dangerous adventure and a commentary on compassion between enemies.

###

My thoughts: I haven’t read the other books in the November Snow Series that accompany She Sees in Her Sleep, but this didn’t deter me from loving these shorts.

“She Forges a Peace” is an interesting story. The words are intentional and short. My favorite line from this section is She knew this peace would be the death of her.

“He Worships His Queen” is about the vampire side of this supernatural world. I’m such a fan of vampire stories, and this one does not disappoint. The characters are intriguing and the story is captivating.

Luka adored Paulo even before he realized what he owed the monk.
She expected him to draw away, but he simply stared at her, fascinated, wondering.

“She Fears the Dark” may be my favorite short of the three. Who doesn’t like adorable fairies? I could easily picture Zinnia and her friends as they go on their adventure.

Overall, I really enjoy the glimpses we get into the lives of vampires and fairies. How their worlds differ and how they are similar. In such short writing, we see their love and loyalty, their friendships, and their abilities. The author has painted such a beautiful supernatural world. And I can’t wait to dive more into the November Snow series.

Four Found Dead
by Natalie D. Richards

The blurb: The last show has ended, but the nightmare is just beginning.

Tonight, Riverview Theaters is closing forever, the last remaining business in a defunct shopping mall. The moviegoers have left, and Jo and her six coworkers have the final shift, a shift that quickly takes a dark turn.

First a stranger arrives with a chilling accusation. Then the power goes out and their manager disappears, along with the keys to the lobby doors and the theater safe, where the crew’s phones are locked each shift. The crew’s tension turns to terror when Jo discovers the dead body of one of her co-workers.

Now their only chance to escape the murderer in their midst is through the dark, shuttered mall. With its boarded-up exits and disabled fire alarms, the complex is filled with hiding places for both pursuer and pursued. In order to survive this night, Jo and her friends must trust one another, navigate the sprawling ruins of the mall, and outwit a killer before he kills them all.

###

My thoughts: Four Found Dead was a new experience for me. Both the author and the book. It’s not your typical thriller. It has this true crime vibe, and I’m obsessed with true crime. So I had a hard time putting this one down.

The writing is superb. It’s intentional and descriptive. You know absolutely nothing and everything at the same time. There are these little snippets of news articles and press releases between some of the chapters that add a creepy feel to the whole story. Plus, as we read from Jo’s point of view, she shares flashbacks from a time before. This gives the reader something else to be wondering about. Like a story within a story. A nice touch!

The characters are fantastic. Each brings a new personality to the story, and each has a purpose. The author does a great job of revealing bits of information gradually so as not to give too much away all at once. The feeling of unknowing never stops. You remain on the edge of your seat from page one to the very end, and there are lots of surprises along the way.

Full disclosure? I stopped breathing more than once. I had tears in my eyes more than once. I felt like I was in the story. I experienced every moment, every terror. So be prepared if you pick up this book. It will take you for a wild ride.

Here are a few quotes I highlighted:

  • As familiar as my own voice, but this time it’s enough to steal my breath and leave my knees wobbly.
  • The whole world is a set of dominoes-everything we say and do touches another domino, and they all tumble this way or that.
  • Some things change you in ways that will never change back.

Eclipse Lake
by Mae Clair

The blurb: Small towns hold the darkest secrets.

Fifteen years after leaving his criminal past and estranged brother behind, widower Dane Carlisle returns to his hometown on the banks of sleepy Eclipse Lake. Now, a successful businessman, he has kept his troubled past a secret from most everyone, including his seventeen-year-old son.

But memories in small towns are bitter and long.

Ellie Sullivan, a nature photographer for a national magazine, has a habit of ping-ponging across the map. Her latest assignment leads her to Eclipse Lake where she becomes caught up in the enmity between Dane, his brother Jonah, and a vengeful town sheriff. When freshly-discovered skeletal remains are linked to an unsolved murder and Dane’s past, Ellie is left questioning her growing attraction for a man who harbors long-buried secrets.

###

My thoughts: This was a fantastic read! From beginning to end, I was obsessed.

The writing is as close to perfect as one can get. The author excels at a painting a picture for the reader.

I fell in love with the characters. They had such charm and wit, unique personalities for sure. You get to see growth happen and dynamics change. The reader gets to “see” from different perspectives, which really made the story come to life.

The story itself is addictive. Romance, humor, suspense, mystery. It has a little bit of everything. I couldn’t wait to read the next chapter. I found myself sneaking in reading time while at work. And this was one of those bittersweet reads. The kind that you really don’t want to finish, and you don’t want to say goodbye to the characters, BUT, you absolutely must find out how it all ends. It ends in an unexpected way and did not disappoint.

The Wedding Trap
by Adrienne Bell

The blurb: Beth Bradley has a problem. Everyone is expecting her successful music executive boyfriend, Charlie, to be her date for her best friend’s wedding. There’s one hitch: Charlie doesn’t exist. Unless she can think of something fast, she’s headed for the most humiliating weekend of her life.

Alex Tanner has a problem. The former Navy SEAL’s search for a double agent lands him at the Kensington Hotel, and he needs a cover to finish the job. When the sexy maid of honor blackmails him into pretending to be her lover, he thinks he’s been handed the solution.

Except Beth has a way of stumbling into trouble, and when the man Alex is hunting starts targeting Beth, Alex has to decide between solving the mystery or protecting the woman who has stolen his heart.

###

My thoughts: The Wedding Trap has a little something for everyone. There’s suspense and intrigue, comedy, family and friendship, romance and a little naughtiness.

I enjoyed the variety of characters and what they brought to the story. The author did a great job bringing the story to life and putting you in the characters’ shoes.

If you enjoy a good rom-com, I’d recommend picking up a copy of this book. It’s a fairly quick read and if you become a fan like I did, The Wedding Trap is part of a series.

The Reunion
by Kiersten Modglin

The blurb: Hotel Lilith holds terrible memories for Cait Du Bois. The darkest night of her life happened within its walls.

Once, she vowed never to return to the place that reminds her of the horror she experienced. But when the hotel is chosen as the location for her high school reunion, Cait finds herself unable to resist the appeal of showing off her new life to the people who once made her existence miserable.

Cait is no stranger to being noticed in public, especially as a bestselling author with an enthusiastic fan base, but back at Hotel Lilith, she was once recognized for a completely different reason. With all eyes on her as she returns to the town she’s spent years running from, Cait finds it increasingly difficult to discern between her fans and foes.

Haunted by the memory of a night that torments her, she resolves to put the past behind her and move on. No one knows the truth about what happened back then. At least, that’s what she’s always believed.

Shortly after her arrival, strange things begin to occur. A mysterious package, strange calls, and frightening text messages seem to be just the beginning of the nightmare about to unfold.

Someone is determined to bring the truth to light. If they succeed, the life Cait has built based on secrets could come crashing down around her. And, if they want her to pay for what she’s done, her lies may be the least of her concerns.

Someone’s out for blood.

###

My thoughts: This book was a recommendation, but for the life of me, I can’t remember by who. So thank you to whoever that was! Let me know in the comments if it was you or if you’ve read the book too!

This book did not disappoint on the ride it took me on. It hooked me from the first few pages.

I love how the chapters were separated. The author takes you back and forth between school days and present day. And it wasn’t hard to follow! Personally, I think this method worked for this style of story, giving you glimpses of the history without unloading all the information at once. It really added to the story as a whole.

The author was incredibly descriptive when focusing on the setting and situation. You can’t help but be immersed into Cait’s story. I felt like I was doing detective work along with her. Trying to figure out what would happen next and who was to blame. I was cautious of almost everyone! And by the end of the story, I had a few theories but none were correct. It was a fantastic surprise ending.

I can’t forget to mention the characters. I either loved or hated them, which I think was the mission of the author. A successful mission.

My only critique is there was a little redundancy. Something that can easily be overlooked, and it could also just be me because I’m weird. Maybe those lines were for emphasis. Either way, it didn’t detract from the story.

If you enjoy edge-of-your-seat mysteries, I’d give this book a read.

Side Note: I’ve started highlighting the lines I really enjoy from books I’m reading so I can mention them in my reviews. I’m not doing great at remembering, I’m too focused on the story. Which isn’t a bad thing! But below is a quote I highlighted from The Reunion. Such a good line!!

Sleighed: A Children’s Christmas Tale
by WJ Scott

The blurb: Tinsel is the newest apprentice in Santa’s Workshop, but this young elf lands himself in strife on his first day! He’s sent to care for the reindeer and instead ends up on a magical adventure. Will the Toy-Inspector allow him back into the Workshop?

A fun Christmas story for younger readers and those young at heart.

###

My thoughts: This was such a delightful read! I had no idea where we were going, but I was excited to get there. I love the magical adventure we go on with Tinsel and the fun we have along the way. And who doesn’t enjoy a sweet, comical Christmas story with Santa and his elves?

Tree Fairies and Their Short Stories
by D.L. Finn

The blurb: It’s 1969, and twelve-year-old Daniel Burns is camping in the redwood forest with his family. Danny wants to listen to his music and read, but his family has other plans. S’mores around the campfire and stories end their first day. The family is sleeping soundly in their secluded tent when Danny wakes up and finds his sister, Colette, is missing. Assuming she went to use the outhouse, he goes after her. When he finds his sister, they discover there is a thin veil between reality and fantasy. Two bonus short stories offer a glimpse into the magical world that finds Danny and Colette. These hidden beings not only share our world but have a role in protecting their forest.

###

My thoughts: I loved so many things about this book, I’m not sure where to start. It might be a new favorite by the author.

There were some excellent pop culture references, like to music and books and even Bugs Bunny. I loved the characters and enjoyed reading the story from different points of view as their lives progressed. Both humans and fairies. That was such a lovely touch because there’s a big difference between the two and the way they see the world. There’s a sweetness shared between the characters, especially the siblings. It pulls at your heartstrings. I suppose I should add it wasn’t all grand and wonderful. We experience some scary moments, and moments that make you mad.

For parts of the story, it was like I was reliving my childhood. All the magic we used to believe in before the real world set in. I like to think that there really is magic around us. With the beautiful descriptions the author provides, you can’t help but imagine the story as it unfolds.

Swamp Ghosts
by Marcia Meara

The blurb: Marcia Meara, author of the popular Wake-Robin Ridge books, sets her second series in the sleepy little town of Riverbend, Florida, where the hungry creatures swimming in the dark waters of the St. Johns River aren’t nearly as dangerous as those walking along the quiet neighborhood streets.

Wildlife photographer Gunnar Wolfe looked like the kind of guy every man wanted to be and every woman just plain wanted, and the St. Johns River of central Florida drew him like a magnet. EcoTour boat owner Maggie Devlin knew all the river’s secrets, including the deadliest ones found in the swamps. But neither Maggie nor Gunn was prepared for the danger that would come after them on two legs.

On a quest to make history photographing the rarest birds of them all, Gunnar hires the fiery, no-nonsense Maggie to canoe him into the most remote wetland areas in the state. He was unprepared for how much he would enjoy both the trips and Maggie’s company. He soon realizes he wants more than she’s able to give, but before he can win her over, they make a grisly discovery that changes everything, and turns the quiet little town of Riverbend upside down. A serial killer is on the prowl among them.

###

My thoughts: In one word, WOW. This book is such a great read! I had to force myself to stop reading so I could go to work. I also had to remind myself I was only reading a story because I was pulled so deeply into the book.

Swamp Ghosts has a lot to offer. Suspense, humor, romance. And you read from multiple points of view, and for this story and what’s going on, it works so well. There are quite a few surprises along the way, and you’re left wondering what will happen next. Definitely some edge-of-your-seat moments!

The characters are well-written. You can’t help but fall in love with a few of the main ones, like Maggie and Gunn. Even the side characters have their charms.

Overall, I loved reading Swamp Ghosts. I highly recommend giving it a look if you enjoy the mixture of suspense and romance.

Twenty-One Minutes
by Verwayne Greenhoe

The blurb: The true story of a medic who finds himself at the site of a horrific accident involving more than a dozen victims. As the medics work to rescue the survivors, Mitch finds one man hopelessly trapped and running out of time. The medic stays with the man, and a conversation between the two begins. It all transpires over twenty-one minutes, but it changed the life of the medic.

###

My thoughts: This was a short read but so powerful. The author put me in the story, and I felt every moment. Oh my word, what a story to share. Please read this.

City of Ashes
by Cassandra Clare
(Book 2 of The Mortal Instruments)

The blurb: Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

###

My thoughts: This is definitely an action-driven story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The human world meets the supernatural world, and it’s a beautiful mixture. There’s love and humor, family and enemies. So many wonderful things rolled into one incredible story.

I fell in love with the characters. There’s some really quirky ones! You get to see the story unfold as you read multiple points of view. For the type of story this is, I think this really helps paint the picture for the reader. There’s quite a bit going. Also, the book has a cliffhanger-ish ending, which I’m not even mad about it. It simply left me anxious for the next one. (Which I’ve already started. Thank you Libby app!!)

I will add that I did see some differences between the book and movie, but I had no problem following the story. The writing is quite good. It’s genuinely hard to put the book away. For someone that has never fully committed to a series, this one has me hooked.

City of Glass
by Cassandra Clare
(Book 3 of the Mortal Instruments Series)

The blurb: To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters—never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City—whatever the cost?

###

My thoughts: Overall, a decent story with some cute characters, sarcasm, and humor.

Branded
by Neva Bell

The blurb: Your typical modern day witches, identical twins Chelsea and Chloe are about to leave their parents behind for their first year of college. There’s only one thing left to do – receive their brands. These magical tattoos not only determine their lesson plans, but also the type of magic the twins will practice for the rest of their lives. Convinced they already know what Branding Day has in store for them, Chelsea and Chloe quickly learn nothing is guaranteed when fate and magic are involved.

While author Neva Bell dabbles with the paranormal in her new novel, Branded includes elements readers of her romantic comedies will recognize – a little bit of humor, drama and romance rolled into one.

###

My thoughts: I was immediately hooked from page one. The world that Neva has created, mixed in with relatable characters, pulls you right in. There are some interesting spins on magic that I haven’t seen before, which really add to the story.

Branded has a little bit of everything-magic, love, family, humor, and suspense. The suspense weaved in this story will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. The end was somewhat predictable, but that could be because of my own creative brain. Plus, I was really invested in the story and the characters. I felt like I was one of them.

As for the writing, if there were errors, I was too wrapped up in the book to notice. The story flows perfectly, with a few twists along the way.

No Such Luck
by Staci Troilo

The blurb: Piper Seidel has one thing going for her—a red carnation given to her by Tommy Burnett in the tenth grade. It might have dried over the years, but it’s still her good luck charm. Losing it sets her life in a downward spiral, forcing her to return to her hometown where she comes face to face with her high school crush.

The years have been kind to Tommy, who looks better than ever. Unfortunately, Piper is at her worst, continually embarrassing herself whenever he’s around. The only plus? Her long-time friend, Jack Rhodes, still lives in town. Since she last saw him, his legs have grown longer, his biceps thicker, and his shoulders broader. He was always the brother she never had, but now she can’t help noticing him in an unsisterly way. Jack is every bit as caring as he’s ever been—until her bad luck drives him away, maybe forever.

Piper needs a new good luck charm, and fast, before she loses her final chance at happiness.

###

My thoughts: This was a fantastic short read! As short as it was, it was packed with all kinds of goodness. You get to see Piper grow and learn, and you feel like you’re right there with her. I’m a little partial to small town stories, so No Such Luck was definitely after my own heart.

The writing is flawless, and the story flows nicely. It’s the perfect, small-town holiday romance. I can’t wait to dive into the next one.

TEQUILA ROSE VIRGINITY BLUES
by Wendy Jayne

The blurb:  Tequila Rose may have met the man of her dreams. Unfortunately, she wakes up suffering from alcoholic amnesia and doesn’t remember anything about the night before. Tall, dark, and Jack may be the cure her jaded heart desperately needs, but Tequila’s wary as friends warn her that Jack hangs out with the local drug dealer. Thrust together at a Speed Dating event, their chemistry sizzles, but is Jack after a different kind of fix?

###

My thoughts: This book is such a wonderful, quick read. I sat down to read, after taking such a horribly long break from books, and could not put it down. From the beginning, I was hooked. It was such a cute, not to mention relatable, start. It’s comical and sweet and exciting with some unknowns.  By the end of the story, I felt like I was walking the journey with the characters. A beautiful job by one of my favorite authors.

JUST HER POETRY
by D.L. Finn

The blurb:  Take a journey with D.L. Finn as she blends her love of nature with her deepest emotions. Sit with her on the forest floor observing its tranquil beauty, or stroll along the ocean’s shore admiring the vastness of its horizon. Here in these peaceful moments you’ll be able to experience her thoughts and feelings in the light—and in the darkness. This is a thought-provoking collection of poetry that invites the reader into all the seasons of a soul.

###

My thoughts:  Poetry was my first love, so I’m a little partial to this style of writing. I also love being one with nature. And I can easily say that the author does not disappoint. She has a beautiful way of writing, words seem to effortlessly flow through the pages. She paints incredible visuals in her poems, describing the view that surrounds her, as we go through the different seasons. This is one of those special books that you can return to again and again.

SATIN & CINDERS
by Jan Sikes

The blurb:  A wild black stallion has cautiously watched a beautiful white mare, from the safety of the forest for many years. He longs to be with her, and ventures close to the barn nightly to communicate with her. They share their deepest desires and secrets. Now it is winter, and the rest of the wild herd has moved on, but the stallion stays. He cannot stand the thought of being so far away from her. The scent of sweet alfalfa hay and the enticing lure of the white mare is too much for him. He must find a way to be with her. But will it be worth the risk? Satin and Cinders is a story of courage and determination.

###

My thoughts:  Since this is a micro read, I feel it requires a shorter review. Otherwise, I may give too much away, and I detest spoilers. 😉  First and foremost, five stars. Easily.

This was the perfect quick read with flawless writing. The story grabs you and takes you on a sweet journey all in one sitting.

MINDSHAFT: PARANORMAL ANTHOLOGY
by S. Burke

Mind-Shaft – Victoria Denton served revenge swiftly and without mercy. Her future happiness seems assured. If only the past would remain where it should.

My thoughts:  I chose not to read any of the blurb before diving into the book. The fact that the book claimed to be a paranormal anthology was enough for me. From the first story, I was hooked. There are twists and turns throughout the pages. You truly have no idea what to expect in any of the 6 stories. I love that about this collection. So unpredictable!

I like the author’s writing style. Great characters and beautiful descriptions. She doesn’t give too much away at the beginning of each story, but the intrigue is still there. There were comical bits, stories that gave me chills, stories that left me asking questions. I enjoyed every moment.

by Wendy Jayne

Covertly, she’s used her witches’ powers seeking a counter spell, but to no avail.
The year of enforced celibacy is grating on her sexual nerves. Cassidy’s situation worsens when she falls for the very sexy warlock, Hunter Rutherford, but must keep him at arm’s length.

Sparks fly when they kiss, but these sparks are the type that burn.
The only way they’ll be able to consummate their relationship is by finding who cast the hex and convincing them to remove the curse.

Bonus Short Read: Snakes & Apples.

My thoughts:  This author has quickly become one of my favorites. She has an incredible way of pulling you into the story. Great writing. Beautiful story flow. Lovable characters. Hexed is no different. It’s such a fun read! There’s magic, romance, and even a little mystery. As I’m finding in most short stories, you’re left wanting more.

FANTASY WRITING PROMPTS
by WJ Scott

The blurb:  31 Fantasy Writing Prompts to ignite your imagination. Have fun creating fantasy stories to share with your family and friends.

My thoughts:  The author does a great job with her writing prompt books. I’ve had the pleasure of reading several and have loved every one. Each book is a unique way to dig into your own writing abilities. Great for both kids and kids at heart!

Fantasy Writing Prompts allows you to dive into new areas of your creative writing – medieval castles, kings and wizards, werewolves and dragons. There are so many wonderful ideas in this book! Even better, it’s a book you can turn to again and again.

BIGFOOT:  A Short Story
by D.L. Finn

The blurb:  Can you believe everything you read? Steve must answer that question when he finds a strange blog while searching for his friend’s address. It was crazy to consider the government would poison a lake to find Bigfoot–and Steve wasn’t crazy. But, there were also some truths weaved into this unbelievable tale. Steve began to question his comfortable reality as he kept reading.

My thoughts:  I’ve always been fascinated by things of the unknown so this story was right up my alley. Great writing, great flow, great story. You are immediately pulled in from page one. The story is unique, intriguing and leaves you wanting more.

VOODOO OR DESTINY: YOU CHOOSE
by Jan Sikes

The blurb: Claire Winters is heartbroken when her husband of many years says he’s found a new love and wants a divorce. While having a pity party with her best friend, Jade, they come up with a daring idea. Together, they construct a Voodoo doll and with the help of several bottles of wine, create a ceremony to bring the same heartbreak to Daniel Winters as he brought to Claire. But do they go too far? You decide!

My thoughts: This was a fantastic short story! It made me want more after that last page, but it also left it open for the reader to create their own outcome. There was suspense and even a little humor. Personally, I’ve always been fascinated by Voodoo, so I was excited to read this story, wondering how involved it would get. It was better than I imagined! A lot of research and time went into this story. The author even mentioned one of the well-known Voodoo Queens of New Orleans, Marie Laveau. This earned major brownie points because she was always one of the main reasons I wanted to visit NOLA.

Overall, the writing was flawless, and the story flowed as it should. I have other works by this author on my Kindle and can’t wait to dive into the next!

SLIMMER
by Wendy Jayne

The blurb: An unexpected wedding invitation spins Pippa’s world off its axis. The bride-to-be’s sexy brother, Alex, is sure to be there. Seven years ago, he jetted out of Pippa’s life, oblivious to her teenage fantasies. This time she’s determined to lasso his heart.

The calorie countdown is ticking, Pippa has only ten weeks to become ‘slimmer’.

If you’ve ever struggled to lose a few unwanted pounds, you’ll empathise with Pippa’s theatrics!

My thoughts: I absolutely loved this story. I could relate to the main character on many levels, as I’m sure many readers could. It’s well-written, with lovable characters, and a great plot. I adored the friendship between Pippa and Simone. The laughter and entertaining antics were non-stop.

Even though SLIMMER is a short story, I’m hoping for a follow-up of some kind to see what happens next. I’m too in love with the characters to let them go!

A PERILOUS THIRST
by Rhani D’Chae

The blurb:  A short story about a gay vampire in the early days of the AIDS epidemic.

My thoughts:  This was quite a short story! I read it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down, intrigued from page one. This was my first read from this author, but I knew the subject was one I would enjoy. A short story with a vampire!

The story was well-written and wonderfully descriptive. I found it fascinating to see the story unfold from the voice of the vampire, quite an interesting spin, compared to what many of us are used to with vampire tales. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

The author also keeps you guessing. For me, the story felt more open, meaning the reader was able to create their own interpretations of what was fully going on.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE
by Young

The blurb: The Truth Will Set You Free is section from Debauchery – the triquel to A Harem Boy’s Saga, a provocative story about a young man who was initiated into a clandestine sexual society through his UK boarding school. From there, he was spirited to the Middle East to attend the Bahriji (Oasis) School in The United Arab Emirates in preparation for Harem services for the wealthy elite.

It is also a love story between the young man, his ‘Big Brother,’ and his ‘Valet,’ who served as his chaperones and mentors.

This book follows the teenagers’ erotic and exotic adventures and experiences at their third Arabian Household Harem, the Quwah. There, they became confidants to a prince, assistants in an international dance club venture, “Carousel,” and apprentices and models in a controversial photography project, “Sacred Sex in Sacred Places.”

This story is an account of the author’s experiences. Through these truths, often demonized by contemporary societies that deem such behaviors inappropriate, the author hopes to dispel condemnation and negativity related to sexuality, love, and personal freedom.

A Harem Boy’s Saga is a series of seven volumes.

My thoughts: This author is a fantastic writer. He’s descriptive and easily pulls the reader in. He’s honest and genuine. His openness is a breath of fresh air. I won’t lie. I was disappointed in this book because of how short it was. I wanted more and will definitely be adding this author’s other books to my TBR list.

Overall, the writing is good and the story line was enjoyable and even comical at times. It was well worth the read and I look forward to the next.

THE HEART’S LULLABY
by Natalie Ducey

The blurb: The Heart’s Lullaby is a candid portrayal of love in all its splendor and pain. Love, in its purest form, is tranquil and soothes the soul. But love, as is life, can sometimes be cruel and unjust with its paths of uncertainty and forced goodbyes. In essence, it is a journey of self-discovery. A continuous journey of becoming. Often, it becomes a delicate dance of holding on and letting go.

We linger in memories of ill-fated love; our minds can easily soil them, and our hearts can effortlessly polish them to perfection, altering their resemblance entirely. We can anchor ourselves to yesterday by zealous choice or solemn grief. So easily, we can become obsessed with what “might have been” and miss the beauty that lies before us. Our minds craft spectacular moments that will never be realized. Why? Is it self-indulgence, or are they necessary companions for our soul’s survival?

Love, its force so formidable, transcends time, distance, and even death. Eternal love is the epitome of its grandeur.

To feel the exquisite, majestic splendor of love is the greatest gift we can give or receive. To have another see the unique beauty in our imperfections, that will protect us and elevate us without greed or envy, a soul willing and proud to walk this journey of life with us and share in its joys and sorrows – this is love, a gift unmeasurable and unmatched by earthly possessions.

But two souls must be willing. Therein lies the intricate complexities of the heart. And in the end, we must never forget love, as is life, is a continuous journey of becoming.

My thoughts: This is the second book of this author’s that I have read. Just like with the first book, I fell in love with the poetry. She has such a beautiful way of writing. There’s so much emotion that goes into her words. Your heart will be touched as you explore the pages of love and pain. Tears will fall. Your own memories may even fade in. Even better, this is a book you can read again and again. It’s that good.

HALLOWEEN WRITING PROMPTS
by W.J. Scott

The blurb: 13 Spooky Writing Prompts to ignite your imagination. Bats and cats, owls and howls, trick-or-treat, hosts and ghosts. Kids, have fun this Halloween by creating spooky stories to scare your family and friends.

My thoughts: Just as the title suggests, this book contains writing prompts geared towards all things spooky. The ideas are creative, fun, and challenging, and would serve as a wonderful activity for children and even those young at heart. Personally, I think this would be an awesome activity for the whole family to do together. A paperback copy, in the format the author uses, is perfect.

Overall, this book is truly fantastic. I love the creativity and thoughts that went into it and feel everyone should pick up a copy for the littles in their family.

FAIRY WRITING PROMPTS
by W.J. Scott

The blurb: 31 Fairy Writing Prompts to ignite your imagination. Have fun creating fairy stories to share with your family and friends.

My thoughts: This is another fantastic writing prompts book from Author W.J. Scott (the second in her Aspiring Authors Series). This time, the writing prompts revolve around fairies and magic. This book is equally as wonderful as the first book, with fun and challenging ideas. More entertainment for the whole family to enjoy together.

Just as with the first book of the series, I highly recommend picking up a copy for the littles in your family.

ARIEL
by Sydney Scrogham

The blurb: Abuse survivor Ariel Harte doesn’t need anyone, especially not her engaged ex-boyfriend Ryan Tracey. Ariel built her walls high in the human realm, but as a Guardian in the magical world of Agalrae, she has more problems than she can handle alone.

One day a dark, magical force infects her and her companion animal. The only way Ariel can find to cure the infection is through a mind link purification ritual. This connection is only possible between two close people, and Ryan is the one who knows Ariel best.

If Ariel wants to survive with her companion animal, she’s going to have to do something she swore she’d never do again – be vulnerable enough with Ryan to let him into her mind. As the infection worsens, Ariel and Ryan decide to risk everything, including their lives.

My thoughts:  In ARIEL you are taken to a new world, a rather interesting one. The whole concept behind this story is unique. The story line is intriguing, the characters are relatable but extraordinary with strong personalities, and the writing is decent. You get suspense, fantasy, humor and even a little romance all wrapped up in this book. The author does an amazing job of painting a picture of the world she has created. You feel like you’re there. Overall, great book!

SECOND CHANCES
by Aaron Brinker

The blurb: Chaun Hutchins was like any normal 32-year-old. He had a wife, a degree, a full-time job, a comfortable home, and a baby on the way. An accident turned his world upside down, but not before he uttered words for which he can never make amends. Haunted by his past, and events that neither he nor his family can explain, Chaun must find answers to his dark troubles, before his past destroys his future.

My thoughts: SECOND CHANCES is well-written, with a nice flow. The reader is immediately pulled into the tragedy of the story, eager to see what will happen next. You watch Chaun develop throughout the story and you can’t help but feel what he feels, with heartache, laughter, family, love. This is truly a beautiful and captivating story. A must read.

SLIVERS OF LIFE
by Beem Weeks

SLIVERS OF LIFE is a collection of short stories. This book is absolutely full of emotions, from humor to heartbreaking to inspiring. You are moved through every story, with every turned page. Each short story takes you on an unforgettable journey, where you can’t deny the multitude of emotions that you feel.

We see stories of neighbors, family, religion, racism. There is this incredible mixture of powerful messages, stories that truly have a clever way of making the reader think. There were moments in this book that I was so gripped by the story that I didn’t realize I had tears in my eyes. It was hard to put the book down. And, if my time had allowed, I would have easily read this book within a day or two. It was that good!

This isn’t the first book that I’ve read authored by Beem Weeks, and it won’t be the last. Much like the first, SLIVERS OF LIFE is well-written, gripping and inspiring.

THE HEART’S JOURNEY HOME
by Natalie Ducey

THE HEART’S JOURNEY HOME is a collection of poems about grief, hardships and self-discoveries. The book states that it contains “poetry of the soul.” I absolutely agree with this statement.

Not only is the writing spot on, but the author’s style of poetry is unique. These poems of love and heartache are filled with inspiring words that are full of emotion and speak volumes for the human heart.

Throughout this book, the poems touch on love, family and relationships. Topics anyone can relate to. You experience the words, feel the emotions and know the pain. From page one, I was hooked.

THE ENCORE
by Christine Feldman

In ENCORE, we meet Jane, who has had her share of hardships and heartache. She’s trying to start over, trying to find herself again. Along Jane’s journey, we meet a few other delightful characters. All playing a big role in Jane’s life.

In one word, I would say this book is incredible. It’s full of emotion – romance, humor, fear, hope, faith. I was hooked from page one. I quickly fell in love with the characters, anxious to see what was next. I felt myself experiencing the same emotions as Jane, which made the character and story that much more realistic.

This isn’t the first book of Christine’s I have read, and it certainly won’t be the last. (She’s always had a fan in me!) The writing is error-free, the story flows, and the characters are relatable. You will hate it when you turn that last page.

PLAYING CUPID (Heavenly Bites Novella #3)
by Christine Feldman

This third novella in Christine’s wonderful Heavenly Bites Series centers on Aimee Beasley, the granddaughter of the meddling matchmaker –Gram—that we’ve grown to love in the previous novellas. In a change of roles, Aimee is determined to set Gram up with the uncle of their downstairs neighbor. However, the neighbor—Doyle—isn’t keen on the idea. Doyle is not only reluctant to set up his uncle, but he isn’t fond of having much to do with Aimee either. This obstacle only makes Aimee work harder, with that goal of matchmaking in mind.

PLAYING CUPID is a delightful, quick read that will make you smile, laugh and have ‘aww’ moments. The author does a splendid job of painting the story, allowing you to watch it unfold, page after page.

Aimee has such a quirky spirit and Doyle starts off as the total opposite. We get to watch him come out of his shell, all thanks to Aimee and her relentlessness. Gram is such a sweet, yet amusing grandma. I loved seeing the table turned, especially after Gram’s many matchmaking attempts with the girls of the Heavenly Bites Series.

Overall, PLAYING CUPID is a well-written story that contains both romance and humor, with lovable and entertaining characters. You can’t go wrong with Heavenly Bites!

There is one definite drawback about PLAYING CUPID. It’s the LAST novella of this series and I am so sad to say good-bye to the lovable and witty characters.

LOVE LESSONS (HEAVENLY BITES NOVELLA #2)
by Christine Feldman

LOVE LESSONS is about Nadia Normandy, who is very self-assured and not afraid to speak her mind. She is also very knowledgeable in the laws of dating. Coaxed by Mrs. Beasley, the town match-maker, Nadia is going to help accountant Benji Garner find a lady. What begins as a challenge turns into something neither could have expected.

LOVE LESSONS is such a delightful read! The story pulls you in from the very beginning. And once you finish, you are anxious for the next story.

We get to continue on a journey with one of the characters from the first novella of this series—Nadia, with her adorable quirkiness. She’s not afraid to be herself OR express herself. Which is the total opposite of Benji. When we first meet him, he comes off as shy and reserved. Together they bring a very witty and interesting combination to the story.

LOVE LESSONS will make your heart melt, but you’ll also find yourself smiling or even laughing out loud with the humor throughout this awesome little story. A fabulous read!

WHERE BLUEBIRDS FLY
by Wendy Storer

WHERE BLUEBIRDS FLY is about thirteen year old Ruby, who’s life gets flipped upside down when she is sent to live in a residential school for girls with emotional problems. Not only does she dislike being at the school and away from home and her baby sister, but she feels like an outcast around these new people that she is forced to live with. There are few things that make her happy now. One is her bag of rocks that reminds her of happier times with Nanna. The other is writing letters to her sister, Lucy. These are her only escapes. And despite how horrible life seems to young Ruby, things are about to change even more.

Like Wendy’s other book—BRING ME SUNSHINE (which I loved!!)—this book focuses a great deal on family and strengthening those special bonds. And although this is a very moving and inspiring story, the author throws in some twists that will make you anxious for the conclusion. (It was a rather quick read for me because of how much I enjoyed it.)

Even though Ruby is barely a teenager, she has such a strong personality. As the reader, you feel for her and wish for something good to happen. The other characters are equally dynamic and the relationships that build will truly touch your heart, especially Ruby’s love for her sister (very evident in the letters) and her Nanna.

WHERE BLUEBIRDS FLY is a fabulous book!! It’s heart-warming and emotional from beginning to end. And it just so happens to make several references to “Wizard of Oz,” which is an awesome bonus! This is one of those books that you will read quickly, just because of how wonderful it is.

LOST IN STARLIGHT
by Sherry Soule

LOST IN STARLIGHT is about high school reporter Sloane Masterson. She may have confidence issues, but she’s a girl that’s not afraid to go against the crowd. The subject of her next story is Hayden Lancaster, the hot new guy in school, aka her crush. There’s a deep connection between these two total opposites. What starts off as a story on hacking, turns into something out of this world! Sloane has more questions than answers and things just seem to get more complicated.

This made for such a great read! Page after page, you are anxious to see what happens next. The story, mixing romance with sci-fi with action, will completely captivate you. The author’s writing will put you in the story. Reading from the viewpoint of the heroine, Sloane, you can’t help but feel what she feels as the story unravels.

We see a variety of characters, most with spunky, fun-loving personalities. They all add different elements to the story. And they all have a fascination with all things horror, which I loved!! (Because, as you know, I’m one of those weirdos that loves horror!) Of course, the main characters, Sloane and Hayden, are the ones you fall in love with, the ones you root for until the end. The immediate connection between these two, and then the chemistry that builds, will pull at your heartstrings. To be young and have such strong feelings so quickly. *insert dramatic sigh*

It ends with a cliffhanger, and you are left anxious for the next read!

LOST IN STARLIGHT has everything that makes a novel a fantastic read—a tough heroine and a brainiac hottie; a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat story; romance with surprising twists; and an ending that will make you long for volume 2.

THE YOUNGER MAN
by Dermot Davis

THE YOUNGER MAN is about Frances, who is approaching 40 and has already had two failed marriages. She has decided to no longer participate in the dating scene, allowing no chance for romance. Despite her plans, Frances encounters a young man, 14 years younger. What evolves between the two, leaves Frances with a difficult choice of whether or not to give love a chance.

THE YOUNGER MAN is a delightful story about learning to love again and opening yourself up to the unknown. We journey with Frances, seeing the story unfold from her view, as she struggles internally with emotion and reason. Although the story came to an abrupt ending (for me anyway), the author left it open to many possibilities. As readers, we get to imagine what’s in store for Frances. (Although, I’m hoping for a sequel!)

The characters each have a unique personality. Frances is witty and rather critical of relationships, always tending to overthink things. Martin is sweet and awkward at times, but always honest. The other characters are equally intriguing and just as realistic as Frances and Martin, with a sometimes-too-honest mother and a very hostile daughter. The variety of personalities make for quite an interesting story.

With brilliant writing skills, the reader is entranced from page one. A comical romance that I believe many, especially women, could appreciate and even relate to.

GENTLEMEN PREFER MISCHIEF
by Emily Greenwood

In GENTLEMEN PREFER MISCHIEF, we find the prim and proper Lily Teagarden. Because of crazy rumors due to strange noises and lights, she is forced to approach her neighbor, Viscount Roxham—aka Hal. Hal is nothing but trouble, having broken Lily’s heart years before as a teenager. Despite their differences, she is desperate to put an end to those crazy rumors. However, the investigation turns into something that neither could’ve expected.

This is such a wonderful read! Emily’s style of writing cannot be beat. You are immediately pulled into this historical romance, anxious to watch the story unfold. The characters each have a unique and dynamic personality. They will completely sweep you away and even melt your heart, at times. We’re able to see the view from both the main characters, which makes it more real, more personal. Lily is a strong and determined woman, one that we could only strive to be. Hal is adorable, with his sneaky, yet charming ways. The chemistry between the two is a major wow factor! And their witty banner is rather amusing, providing this novel with a nice touch of humor.

I loved Emily’s first book of the REGENCY MISCHIEF SERIES and I believe I enjoyed this one just as much, if not more.

JAZZ BABY
by Beem Weeks

JAZZ BABY is set back in the summer of 1925 in Mississippi. We read about Emily Ann Teegarten and her life as it is flipped upside down with one horrific incident after another. Forced to live with her aunt, Emily begins plotting her escape, with nothing but a dream to sing jazz in New York City. She hopes that the speakeasies of New Orleans are short stepping stones to her dream in the Big Apple. BUT Emily is introduced to more than she could’ve imagined.

We read from the eyes of young Emily Ann and you can’t help but feel like you’re walking beside her. Emily experiences things that will completely shock you, but her reaction and maturity will often make you forget she is barely a teenager. These shocking moments may even anger you because they seem so realistic. This is true for the entire book. Emily’s journey, the characters, the dialogue, everything seems real, as if the story were unfolding right before you. The characters we are introduced to are colorful and unique, making the book that much better.

JAZZ BABY is filled with suspense, action, drama and even humor. The author’s writing skills truly shine in this debut novel. You are hooked from page one and on the edge of your seat through each little suspenseful twist.heir diversity, he dreams of God. He shares his dreams, but never expected the reaction he receives.

This is an adorable children’s book, filled with hope. We get to see the God of many faiths and religions through the eyes of a child. The author focuses on the importance of prayer and unity when it comes to differences of opinion on religion.

BONNIE’S STORY:  A BLONDE’S GUIDE TO MATHEMATICS
by Janis Hill

As you can tell from the title, this is about Bonnie, whom others stereotype as a typical, not-too-smart blonde. In actuality, she is the daughter of two very intellectual parents—each having their PhDs—so some of the smarts rubbed off on her. She proves this point when meeting a wandering math genius, Rogan. Rogan is the leader of a group of some extraordinary ‘nerds’—called Maths that Stays. Because of this quirky group, Bonnie is introduced to a new world. Agreeing to join the group, however, turns out to be more than she bargained for.

This is such a wonderful read! The relationship between Bonnie and Rogan will make you smile. The pair couldn’t be more different in personalities, yet they find out how much they have in common as their fondness of one another grows. The other ‘nerds’ of the group, although some play bigger roles than others, are a delight, bringing a little spunkiness to the story line.

The story is told through the eyes of Bonnie and is told on a very personal level, giving the reader a true sense of being there. The story line flows nicely and, at times, puts you on the edge of your seat. Throughout the book, small twists will make you wonder how it will end. This is one that’s rather difficult to predict, which makes you like it all the more.

EMBRYO
by J.A. Schneider

EMBRYO is an amazing book, absolutely wonderful! It revolves around Jill Raney, an intern at a well-known hospital. This hospital, famous for its fertility and genetic engineering, becomes the site of tragedy. After two pregnant women die and other pregnancy complications arise, Jill questions her superiors–including the handsome resident David–however, they insist that there is no common link between the victims. Alone, Jill starts an investigation, but she exposes more than she ever could have anticipated.

This medical thriller will pull you in immediately, with a captivating opening that can easily be visualized due to the author’s superb writing skills, which you see throughout this book. You walk along with Jill during her suspenseful investigation, anxious to see what will happen next.

Jill is a fascinating character, strong and independent and determined. Along with her you have a variety of other characters, each with their own unique personality traits. The relationship that develops between Jill and David provides just the right amount of romance, without taking away from the mystery and thrill of the story.

Without a doubt, I would highly recommend this book. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and you won’t be able to let go until you make it to the very end.

EMBRYO 2
by J.A. Schneider

EMBRYO 2 is the continuation of the wonderful story we read in EMBRYO. We follow along with the hospital intern and resident, Jill and David. After a few days’ rest to recover from the turmoil caused by a crazy doctor, the two are back at work. Now being treated like celebrities, they are being fussed over by both fellow doctors and patients. Things are hectic as they attempt to find some normalcy. To further complicate things, a victim enters the hospital bearing a cryptic message, the first of many. Evidence points to a killer that is targeting the hospital’s latest heroes. Jill and David must work together, alongside the investigators, in hopes of uncovering the secret villain.

Another superb book by the author. (I am now a devoted fan!) The same dynamic characters, only with more suspense and more twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The author’s word usage, much like in the first book, puts the reader in the hospital–seeing what the characters see, feeling what they feel. Throughout this book, we get to see those same wonderful relationships–between Jill and David, between the interns, between the doctors and interns. There’s an underlying emphasis on those friendships we see. They protect each other, support each other. This adds a nice element that goes beyond suspense and mystery. The author has created this place and these characters, that you can’t help but fall in love with. At the end of each book, you are anxious to see what happens next. I was thrilled to see that EMBRYO 3 is in the works. It will definitely be on my must-read.

THE SECRETS OF MONTEBELLIS
by Cheryl Colwell

THE SECRETS OF MONTEBELLIS is about Lisa Richards, who is the Guardian of Fire Mountain—a mine that used to contain precious fire opals. She is up against many people, some who are trying to steal the mountain from her family and some trying to keep her from reviving the small town of her ancestors. She could be risking a lot, including her marriage and even her life. Along the way, she meets Steven Taylor, who immediately notices there’s more to Lisa than she lets on. He may be the one to discover her secrets that she has been hiding from everyone else. It could either destroy her or help her.

This is a wonderful book! There are so many good qualities about THE SECRETS OF MONTEBELLIS. From beginning to end, it keeps you guessing and in complete suspense. Add in a mixture of mystery, drama, and romance and you have the perfect book to escape in. The characters are dynamic and I immediately fell in love with them. Lisa is such a strong woman with so much against her, but she never gives up and is fortunate to have her family and friends there with full support. That being another nice touch—family and friends being very important throughout the book.

And, in all honesty, I don’t know how much research went into this novel. Or how much of it was based on truth. Regardless, I found myself fascinated in the history of Lisa’s family and mine. It seemed so realistic and I think the history made the story that much more appealing.

THE APPLETON HOUSE
by Nicole Castro

This novella is about Ashe, who won the bid to remodel the bathroom of the Appleton House. Ashe is the type of guy that always gets what he wants, including women, especially women. He’s arrogant and even refers to himself as a jerk. This new remodeling gig is a dream job, complete with room and board. He has the pleasure of meeting his employer’s two attractive daughters. One of which is still in high school, but that doesn’t stop her from attempting to seduce Ashe. The second daughter, Perry, is older and has caught the attention of the new guest. To his surprise, she is engaged but he quickly realizes that her fiance may not be the man she really wants or needs. Ashe, in his usual egotistical manner, thinks he’s the man to satisfy her womanly needs. Only Perry turns out to be more, and mean more, than he anticipated. He is left with a tough decision regarding this engaged beauty, to act on feelings or not.

I adored this book! It’s a quick, enjoyable read. The story line flows and the characters are dynamic. I especially like the chemistry between Ashe and Perry. Ashe comes off as an arrogant typical male, but we get to see his softer side too, which is heartwarming. Perry is a spunky, honest, and caring young lady that also melts your heart. Put the two together and you have quite the match. This story is full of passion that will leave you wanting more.

SEVERED – SLEEPY HOLLOW
by Dax Varley

In SEVERED, Dax Varley takes on the story many of us know and creates an interesting concept. Set back around the time of The Revolutionary War, the legend of the Headless Horseman is known throughout this small town. The main character is Katrina, the daughter of the wealthiest man in the Hollow. It’s no surprise that she is sought after by many men, none of which are worthy enough to receive the same sentiment.

When the schoolmaster is found dead, and headless, the townspeople panic because the Horseman has struck again. The new schoolmaster comes into town, catching the eye of young Katrina. When the Horseman marks Ichabod, Katrina wants nothing more than to save him, even if it means fleeing her home.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has always been one of my favorite tales. Dax did a wonderful job of creating a new dimension to the story, allowing us to see it from a young heroine’s viewpoint. Severed is full of mystery and twists and suspense. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering and guessing what could possibly happen next. The characters are wonderful. Katrina is such a strong woman. She is independent and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. This is a rare delight for the time period. Ichabod is an amusing character, being nontraditional in and out of the classroom—another nice rarity. The two of them together are a delight. They have an immediate connection and the bond that is created pulls at your heartstrings, adding a pleasant element of romance to this suspenseful tale. Overall, I would say this is a great book that anyone young or young at heart would enjoy.

THE POWER OF TWO
by Lori J. Sawicki

THE POWER OF TWO is about a sixth grader, Jamie. She decides to try something new to break out of the cool girl, Sadie’s routine. Her plan backfires and she is kicked out of the ‘cool group.’ To her relief, she befriends Pru Wheeler, the smallest sixth grader. They connect almost immediately and form a tight friendship. The two decide to start a lacrosse team that’s open to all students, not just those from Sadie’s clique. When things seem to be going great, tragedy strikes and Jamie is forced to make some tough decisions.

This book is wonderful! Everything about it makes it worth reading. The story line flows; the characters are strong and unique. It shows the importance of friendship and family. There’s heartache and drama, as well as courage and strength. I literally cried with it, which says a lot coming from me. It touches on some serious issues that a lot of younger people are being forced to deal with. It’s appropriate for anyone, young or young at heart.

IT HAPPENED UNDER THE MISTLETOE
by Valerie Bowman

IT HAPPENED UNDER THE MISTLETOE is a wonderful holiday novella. We are introduced to two main characters, Oliver Townsende and Cerian Blake. Both of which are having difficulty fighting off the opposite sex. Oliver recently inherited a dukedom, so ladies are after him for the title and the money that comes with it. While Cerian has an interfering mother that is bound and determined to find her a proper mate. Neither of them are interested in these suitors, so they devise a plan. They fake a courtship to keep their suitors at bay. Only the arrangement turns out to be more than either one bargained for.

I enjoyed this novella very much! From page one, I was glued; I couldn’t put my kindle down. There’s humor and passion and romance. It just lifts your spirit! Perfect for the holiday season. The characters are easy to fall in love with. They are charming and quick-witted. You find yourself rooting for them. The story line is superb, leaving you wanting more. This is a pleasurable read I would recommend to anyone.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
by Jennifer Wenn

A FAMILY AFFAIR is about Lady Francesca Darling, who has the chance to be reacquainted with a past love, Devlin, the one from when she was a mere five years old. They meet again at her debutante ball and she finds that her feelings are stronger than ever. To her surprise, the feelings are mutual. Only they both have different ideas for a happy marriage.

This is a wonderful novel. The characters have unique & realistic personalities. Francesca is strong and independent and works hard to make things happen. She has a lot of devotion and love to offer, coming from such a large family. Devlin is more of a stubborn character, coming from a harsh childhood, and seems to think he knows what’s best. Despite their differences in opinion, they have an amazing connection, that is heartfelt. The story has passion and romance and even drama and humor. It’s an enticing read, one that I couldn’t put down.

ONCE UPON A ROAD TRIP
by Angela N. Blount

ONCE UPON A ROAD TRIP is the story of Angeli. Recently graduated from high school, she is unsure of her next step, so decides to embark upon a road trip. During her two-month trip, she stays with friends she connected with online. She goes on quite an adventure, meeting interesting characters along the way. Through obstacles and mixed emotions, as well as creating fond memories, Angeli returns home with quite the realization.

This is an excellent memoir. To travel to so many new places and completely alone is amazing. She has such strength and such drive! I felt like I traveled the journey with Angeli. You feel what she feels, see what she sees. And every step, every stop, is enjoyable. And as you meet and learn about the characters, you can’t help but fall in love with some.

This book has so many good qualities. There’s humor and drama. It’s inspirational and heartwarming. One of my favorite elements was Angeli’s faith, which plays a major role in this memoir. This book has a lot to offer and would be a wonderful read for anyone.

THE COLORS OF FRIENDSHIP
by K.R. Raye

THE COLORS OF FRIENDSHIP revolves around three friends as they adventure through college. Melody is quite the romantic, waiting for her prince charming. Imani is all about her education, succeeding, and landing that dream job. Lance’s priorities are football and his girls–Melody and Imani.

Melody meets her potential prince and things move quickly in their relationship, making things difficult between her and her friends. Only everyone doesn’t see what happens behind closed doors. Things aren’t always as wonderful as they appear or as we like to imagine they are.

Imani, always focusing on school, finds there may be more to life and more to a particular friendship. But is she willing to risk it or will her mind rule over her heart?

Lance may have one-night stands on a regular basis, but he’s definitely faithful when it comes to protecting his favorite ladies. When the time comes, and lives are on the line, will he make it in time?

I thoroughly enjoyed THE COLORS OF FRIENDSHIP. It’s well-written with very realistic, strong characters. The story line, with both suspense and romance, keeps you intrigued and you’re left wanting more in the end. It touches on some very sensitive issues that we see in real life, especially in the college environment. We are often blinded by new love and Melody is definitely blinded and can’t see the seriousness behind what is an abusive relationship. Then you have Imani, who fights back any urge to make more of a good friendship. I believe most people can relate to that scenario. And Lance is the friend we can all hope for. Loyal, honest, and always there. The friendship the three share is heart-warming and one worth reading about.

DEAD RINGER
by Jim Yackel

DEAD RINGER is about Jesse Same. We follow along with him on a unique journey in Chittenango, the very birthplace of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He is known in his hometown as the Elvis impersonator. More importantly, he is a Christian and has a son who takes after him. Unfortunately, many of the townspeople, including the boy’s mother and stepfather, don’t have the same beliefs. Jesse has been gifted with prophetic dreams and visions and this amazing trait plays a major role throughout the book. These dreams and visions may lead to the end of the world as we know it.

I was immediately pulled into this book. It’s frightening, but inspirational with an element of realism. Jesse, and even his son, exhibit such strength, such faith. The relationship between the father and son will melt your heart. My favorite part about this book is the role and importance of Christ. It’s not your typical Christian fiction. There’s mystery and suspense and even a dose of action and romance. It’s a book that simply won’t disappoint.

DON’T LOCK ME AWAY
by Bethany Brook

DON’T LOCK ME AWAY is about Louisa, who was born into a privileged English family in the early 1900’s. We get to see her grow up in a family where Christian beliefs are of most importance, and when rules are not followed then discipline is a must. It’s quite evident that, in this time, social class barriers do exist and are enforced.

Those class barriers are the reason Louisa’s world is turned upside down. She falls in love with the gardener’s son, Edward. They plan to run away to Australia where they can happily live together. When their secret is discovered, Louisa finds herself locked away in St.Mary’s, a home for morally endangered women. She is treated horribly and there seems to be no hope of escaping. For when she does attempt to escape, she is sent to St. Christina’s, which is rumored to be much worse. All she can do is hope for a miracle, and one day pray she is reunited with her one true love.

DON’T LOCK ME AWAY is a wonderful book. It is very well-written and has a nice element of both suspense and drama. It’s obvious the author did a great deal of research. The characters, the dialog, and even the experiences in the penitentiaries were all quite realistic. I had a difficult time putting the book down, eager to see what would happen next. The relationship between Louisa and Edward was heartwarming. They have a deep passion and love for one another and they won’t let anything get in the way of them being together. Definitely a great read!

CHAIN OF EVIDENCE
by DB Corey

CHAIN OF EVIDENCE is about Detective Moby Truax. The detective has a lot of things against him. He is nearing the age of retirement, losing his skills of photographic memory, and possibly headed to a desk job. His most recent case may just put him over the edge. There’s a Cyanide Killer, nicknamed CK, that is murdering the women of his town. Every murder, every clue leads to a dead end. Because of the seriousness of the case (and the aforementioned dead ends), Truax is unwillingly forced to partner with FBI Special Agent Frances Vecchio, who is distractingly good-looking and seems to have her own agenda. Truax is alone in believing there’s a possible copycat. Regardless, Truax follows the chain of evidence no one else sees, leading him to an unexpected conclusion.

CHAIN OF EVIDENCE, I believe, is the first crime thriller I have read. And to be honest, I was thoroughly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It was quite the page-turner. The story has a nice element of suspense, leaving the reader anxious to see what happens next. You jump right into the story, trying to help Truax solve the case. And just when you think you have it figured out, the author creates another twist. Another notable element of this book is that the characters have unique personalities. Truax is a determined man, facing what feels like personal extinction. Then you have the young and attractive Vecchio, who, at the snap of a finger, gets exactly what she wants and when she wants it. This is especially true when referring to Captain Atkins, who you would never guess is a married man. This book is realistic, suspenseful, and very entertaining, everything a good thriller needs. I could even see it as an addictive TV series one day. All in all, CHAIN OF EVIDENCE is a fantastic book that I would highly recommend.

BRING ME SUNSHINE
by Wendy Storer

BRING ME SUNSHINE is about Daisy, who has a forgetful father and an imaginative little brother. Although she’s only fifteen years old and already dealing with life as a teenager, Daisy is forced to sometimes act as the adult of her family. Not only does she take care of her brother Sam, but she has to clean up after her father. And not just dirty dishes. Because of his forgetfulness, we see him forget to pick Sam up from school and leave the tub’s water running til it practically floods the bathroom. Everything in Daisy’s life seems to be going downhill. Her dad’s condition seems to be getting worse, putting more responsibilities on her plate. She even had to give up her passion for drumming, despite how talented she was. When things begin to spiral out of control, hope enters in the shape of an old friend, Dylan. He has bigger and better plans and intends to take Daisy right along with him.

This book is quite refreshing. It steers away from what has become normal in today’s fiction and focuses more on family dynamics. Daisy’s character is one that will warm the heart of any reader. She has an unconditional love for her family and does everything in her power to keep that family together. Her relationship with Sam is absolutely precious, something that’s often rare to see. She goes above and beyond to ensure that he has a happy and secure home life. She is the perfect big sister. Another notable factor is that the author incorporates music into every chapter, which I found most appealing. The journey you go on with Daisy, with both her family and with Dylan, is enjoyable. You’ll find yourself waiting for that beacon of hope, waiting for the good to come. Overall BRING ME SUNSHINE is, without a doubt, a pleasurable read!

SHATTERED SILENCE
by Sherry Soule

SHATTERED SILENCE is Book 2 of the Spellbound Series. Much like the first book, it pulls you in from the first page. It’s a book you simply can’t put down.

We get to continue on a journey with 16 year old Shiloh Trudell. She has always had the gift of Sight, especially when dealing with creepy little shadows, but only recently does she discover her true abilities in magick. She has to focus on improving those skills to take on what has become inevitable. The day is quickly approaching for her to fight the demon–the demon who has a hit list for the town’s teenagers. All of this seems to revolve around Fallen Oak’s haunted house, Craven Manor, which has recently reopened to undergo renovations. Not only is she dealing with the normal tribulations of being an outcast teenager, and now the added addition of demon hunting, but Shiloh has also been drawn to Trent Donovan, the heir of Craven Manor. In her heart, she knows she’s not the only one hiding a dark secret.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series by Sherry. She does an amazing job of making the story come to life; I felt like I walked beside Shiloh in her journey, rooting for her every step of the way. The connection she has with Trent is indescribable. It pulls at your heartstrings. They have this remarkable chemistry, this pure passion for each other. You find yourself falling in love with these wonderful characters. I love that we get to see Shiloh continue to grow and strengthen in her abilities and in her confidence. She matures through the book, realizing what’s truly important. Without a doubt, I highly recommend this book.

BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN
by Sherry Soule

BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN is Book 1 of the Spellbound Series. We travel along the journey of teenager Shiloh Trudell. Not only does she live in the supposedly haunted town of Fallen Oaks, where teens randomly vanish as if they were on a hit list, but, as she gets closer to her sixteenth birthday, more and more weird things start to happen. Shiloh has always been slightly different than her friends because of her gift of sight, but her talents seem to go deeper than the simplicity of seeing shadows and ghosts. After accepting a summer job at Fallen Oaks’ very own haunted house, Craven Manor, Shiloh encounters more problems than anticipated. Just moved back to town and into the Manor is Trent Donovan, the town’s heartthrob, charming rebellion. Despite her efforts, Shiloh connects with him on a new level. Now, she has to deal with the powers she has suddenly discovered she has, as well as protect Trent and whoever else might be next on the supernatural hit list.

I absolutely loved this book–everything about it! Both the story line and the characters are believable. It’s written so well and the words just flow; it’s like you’re right there the whole time. More so, with the wonderful use of imagery, it’s easy to visualize that journey as you walk it. Along with the other characters, we get to see Shiloh grow, becoming stronger and more sure of herself and her capabilities. I often found myself smiling at the undeniable chemistry (and cuteness) between her and Trent. The book keeps the reader guessing, keeping you unsure of what will happen next and when another spirit will appear. My interest was piqued from page one and I found it very hard to put my kindle down. The one drawback; I’m devastated that the book is over because I am anxious to see what happens next.

OUT OF THE BOX: AWAKENING
by Jennifer Theriot

Here we read about Olivia Peterson. She’s living her life, as a mother and as a wife. Everything is as good as it can be. Her kids all have their own life, her husband has a great job. Can’t get any better. So she thinks. Then, her husband gets a job transfer. Olivia has to pick up her life in Texas and move to the big city of Chicago. She’s thrown into a new life and a new home, where, until her and her husband find a place of their own, she is forced to live with a man she doesn’t know. Of course, her husband’s widowed friend is very welcoming and hospitable. But it’s a big change and Olivia does not easily accept adjustments in her life. However, she soon learns that everything she thought she knew about herself and her life will change, whether she likes it or not.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the characters! It’s easy to fall in love with them. Each one adds a special element to the story. And the story, itself, is compelling. There’s romance, comedy, and drama. The unconditional love in this book is something we can all hope for. My favorite part is that the meaning of family is taken to a new level. It goes outside bloodlines. Families are best when there’s a mixture of personalities and that is exactly what we find in this book. A big, eccentric, extended family.

AVERSION
by Kenechi Udogu

AVERSION is Book One of the Mentalist Series. It is about high school student Gemma Green. She is an Averter, which means she connects with certain people and has the ability to help change their minds so something bad doesn’t happen. Her father has trained her well for her first Aversion. And it seems to go as planned. That is until her Aversion target tries to befriend her. She has spent her whole life keeping to herself, purposely not making friends because of how often Averters must move. Only after that first Aversion her life gets flipped upside down, as she discovers the truth she has been shielded from.

This is such a great read! The creativity that went into this book, the characters, and the story line is amazing. I was hooked from the first page. It’s imaginative, intriguing, and masterful. And I cannot wait to read the next book!

A LITTLE NIGHT MISCHIEF
by Emily Greenwood

In A LITTLE NIGHT MISCHIEF, Felicity Wilcox wants nothing more than to regain ownership of the Tethering estate. But the charming James Collington has won the ownership in a game of chance. He needs the estate to fix a wrong and Felicity wants to fulfill a promise she made to her dying mother. Their journey through the book is both heartwarming and comical (I literally laughed out loud).

All in all everything about this book makes it a great read. The undeniable chemistry between Felicity and James, secret pasts, sudden interest in Felicity’s love life, all wonderful elements that make this book come to life.

COMPASS
by Jennifer Gibson

COMPASS is the second book of a series. It’s both well-written and intriguing. As if being a female teenager isn’t enough, Jessie has to struggle as being hearing impaired. You get to walk with her on a very personal journey, of school and relationships, of discovering her strength and herself. I found myself glued to my kindle, as I read page after page of this truly amazing account of her life. The story is inspirational and would be very eye-opening for any teenager. I will definitely recommend this book to others. I’ll also be looking into the other two books of this trilogy.

TRUSTED
by Taylor L. Stimac

This is the author’s novel debut and it’s pretty awesome, in my opinion. I would highly recommend it to anyone. From beginning to end, I was hooked! The characters and the storyline are completely captivating, making it near impossible to put down. This book has everything a reader could ask for. Family and relationships mixed with a little bit of suspense and drama.

You can’t help but fall in love with the characters. The main character, Tegan, is so real, so easy to relate to. First date, first kiss, first love. Monumental stepping stones, especially to a sixteen year old girl. What could have been the perfect life, gets flipped upside down by a mystery man. You’re pulled right along with Tegan, trying to figure out exactly what’s going on and trying to make the right decisions along the way. The fact that God is throughout this book makes it that much better.

The only drawback is I wanted more. I’m anxious to see what happens next!

by Krista McGee
